Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
We’ll only recommend tooth extraction if there is truly no way to salvage the tooth in question, or if it poses a serious threat to your future dental health. A few of these situations include:
- A tooth is severely damaged or decayed and cannot be saved with a crown or other restoration
- A baby tooth refuses to fall out on its own
- A tooth or teeth are impacted, meaning they didn’t erupt properly (often happens to wisdom teeth)
- Teeth need to be removed prior to orthodontic or restorative treatment
The Process of Removing a Tooth
The first step of the process is always to numb your mouth thoroughly. Then, we will proceed to remove the tooth in question. If it has broken through the gumline, then our dentist in Turlock, Dr. Ishaya, will grip the tooth, rock it loose, and remove it from the socket (this is known as a “simple extraction”). If the tooth in question is trapped underneath the gumline, however, then a surgical extraction is needed instead. In this case, he will create a small incision in the gums to access the tooth before removing it section by section.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Before you return home, we will provide you with a list of aftercare instructions. Some general ones include:
- Replacing the gauze pads as needed
- Sticking to extremely soft foods, like applesauce
- Taking prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed
- Placing a cold compress against the outside of your cheek to manage swelling
- Brushing and flossing carefully around the extraction site
- Avoiding strenuous exercise, like sprinting
